August Strindberg (1849-1912)

| 1849: |
Johan August Strindberg wordt geboren op 22 januari in Stockholm
als derde kind van dienstbode Carl Oscar Strindberg en zijn vroegere
dienstmeisje Ulrika Eleonora Norling. |
| 1862: |
Op dertienjarige leeftijd sterft zijn moeder aan tuberculose. |
| 1869: |
Hij doet een poging toegelaten te worden tot de Royal Theatre In
Stockholm waarin hij jammerlijk faalt. Hij schrijft zijn eerste stuk. |
| 1870: |
Zijn vierde geschreven stuk In Rome wordt opgevoerd. |
| 1872: |
Hij schrijft het historisch drama Meester Olof, over de 16e
eeuwse Zweedse hervormer. Het is zijn eerste avondvullende stuk.
Het wordt pas negen jaar later
opgevoerd. |
| 1877: |
Strindberg trouwt met Siri von Essen. |
| 1879: |
Strindberg gaat failliet. Hij plaatst zichzelf definitief
als schrijver met het ‘autobiografische’ werk De Rode
Kamer. |
| 1883: |
Hij verruilt Zweden voor Zwitserland, na heftige aanvallen
op zijn werk. Hij blijft zes jaar weg. |
| 1884: |
Zijn korte verhalenbundel Huwelijksverhalen komt uit, en
hij wordt beschuldigd van godslastering. |
| 1887: |
De Vader komt uit; een jaar later wordt het een succes in
Duitsland. |
| 1889: |
Zijn stuk Miss Jullie speelt in zijn eigen opgerichte theater
met Siri von Essen in de hoofdrol. Het theater gaat failliet. |
| 1891: |
Strindberg scheidt van Siri. |
| 1893: |
Strindberg trouwt met de Oostenrijkse journaliste Frida Uhl. Hij emigreert
naar Frida’ s familie in Oostenrijk. |
| 1898: |
Hij schrijft deel I en II van Naar Damascus, wat de grondlegger
werd van het expressionistische theater uit de twintigste eeuw. In
de daarop volgende jaren schrijft hij 35 stukken. |
| 1901: |
Hij trouwt met Harriet Bosse, zij verlaat hem binnen het
jaar. Hij schrijft Een Droomspel. |
| 1907: |
In dit jaar schrijft hij onder andere De Spooksonate; het stuk
wordt lauw ontvangen. |
| 1908: |
Hij verhuist naar zijn laatste huis; de "Blue Tower" nummer
85, Drottninggatan, Stockholm (nu het Strindberg Museum). Hij wordt
verliefd op Fanny Falkner, een jonge actrice. |
| 1909: |
Schrijft zijn laatste stuk, De Grote Straatweg. |
| 1909-1912: |
Hij schrijft pamflettistische stukken in de krant gedurende drie
jaar. |

Hij sterft aan maagkanker. Strindberg is 63 jaar geworden. |

| 1849: |
Johan August Strindberg born in Stockholm on Jan. 22 as the third
child of the shipping merchant Carl Oscar Strindberg and his former
maid-servant Ulrika Eleonora Norling. |
| 1862: |
At the age of thirteen, his mother dies of tuberculosis. |
| 1869: |
Fails entrance test at the Royal Theatre in Stockholm. Writes his
first play. |
| 1870: |
His fourth written play “In Rome” is performed. |
| 1872: |
He writes the historical drama Master Olof about the Swedish
16th century reformer. It’s his first evening performance.
It will be performed for the first time nine years later. |
| 1877: |
Strindberg marries Siri von Essen. |
| 1879: |
Strindberg goes bankrupt. He writes the ‘autobiographical'
novel The Red Room, Strindberg’s breakthrough as a writer. |
| 1883: |
He leaves Sweden for Switzerland, after major critiques in his
work. He stays there for six years. |
| 1884: |
He publishes a volume of short stories, Marriage, and faces
trial for blasphemy. |
| 1887: |
He publishes The Father; which becomes a hugh succes in Germany
a year later. |
| 1889: |
Miss Julie is staged by his own theatre with Siri von Essen
in the title role. The theatre goes bankrupt. |
| 1891: |
Strindberg divorces Siri von Essen. |
| 1893: |
Strindberg marries Austrian journalist Frida Uhl. He moves to Fridas
family in Austria. |
| 1898: |
He writes Parts I and II of his dramatic trilogy To Damascus,
which was to become the starting-point for the expressionist theatre
of the 20th century. In the years coming, he writes thirty-five plays. |
| 1901: |
He marries Harriet Bosse, who leaves him within a year. He writes
A Dream Play. |
| 1907: |
This year he writes four Chamber Plays including The Ghost
Sonata, which was not a great success. |
| 1908: |
Moves to his last home, The "Blue Tower" at No 85, Drottninggatan,
Stockholm (now housing the Strindberg Museum). He fallls in love
with Fanny Falkner, a young actress. |
| 1909: |
He writes his last play, The Great Highway. |
| 1909-1912: |
His writes articles on politics, religion and literature in the
newspapers. |
| 1912: |
He dies on May 14, by cause of cancer of the stomach. Strindberg
was 63 years old. |
